Twitter introduces new policy that prohibits linking out URLs to Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, and more
Twitter has published a new platform policy that prohibits users, at both the tweet level and the account level, from linking to other social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, and more, threatening users with tweet deletion or account suspension.
In a post on Sunday, Twitter said that in addition to posting linking out URLs to 3rd-party social media networks, the platform will also take action against users who include handles for profiles outside of Twitter, giving the example of “follow me @username on Instagram” and “check out my profile on Facebook – facebook.com/username,” which would violate the new platform policy.
Furthermore, Twitter will ban links to services such as linktr.ee, which allows users to share multiple links to their various social media profiles through one URL, as well as confirming that efforts to bypass the system, such as spelling out “dot” for social media platforms that use “.” in the names to avoid URL creation, or sharing screenshots of your handle on a prohibited social media platform, will lead to action from Twitter.

According to the social network, if violations of this policy are an isolated incident or first offense, it may take a number of actions ranging from requiring deletion of one or more tweets to temporarily locking account(s). Any subsequent offenses will result in permanent suspension.
If violations of this policy are included in a user’s bio and/or account name, Twitter will temporarily suspend the accounts of offenders and require changes to their profile to no longer be in violation. Subsequent violations may result in permanent suspension.
