Twitter rolls out new gold verification badge for official business accounts
Twitter is rolling out new gold verification badges to represent official business accounts on the platform.
Unlike blue badge verification, which is available to any user who pays for the Twitter Blue subscription service, even if they aren’t who they say they are, the new gold verification badge is not available to purchase or apply for, with the social network seemingly applying the new badge only to select handles for large brands with a substantial following.
Twitter hasn’t publicly announced the introduction of the new gold verification badge, or shared any information on whether businesses will eventually be able to apply to have a gold checkmark next to their handle.
Over the weekend, the social network made yet another change to its verification system by showing a message on ‘legacy verified accounts’ that were verified under Twitter’s previous verification process, noting that these accounts ‘may or may not be notable,’ replacing the previous label that said that accounts that were genuinely verified by Twitter were ‘notable in government, news, entertainment, or another designated category.’
In addition to the new gold checkmark, Twitter is planning to introduce a gray verification badge to distinguish accounts belonging to government officials in the near future.
