iPhone 15 Pro rumored to support higher wired transfer speeds via USB-C compared to regular iPhone 15
Apple is widely expected to swap out the Lightning connector in favor of USB-C beginning with the iPhone 15 series next year, although, according to respected industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will likely limit fast USB-C transfer speeds to the high-end iPhone 15 Pro models and not the regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
According to Kuo, the standard iPhone 15 models will likely continue to feature USB 2.0 transfer speeds, the same as Lightning on the current iPhone lineup, with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max rumored to feature “at least” USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3.
Apple’s move to swap out the Lightning connector in favor of USB-C was confirmed by Greg Joswiak last month in response to the European Union passing a new law that requires all smartphones sold within the 27 countries of the EU to adopt USB-C charging ports by autumn 2024.

My latest survey indicates all 2H23 new iPhones will abandon Lightning and change to USB-C, but only two high-end models (15 Pro & 15 Pro Max) will support the wired high-speed transfer, and the two standard ones (15 & 15 15 Plus) still support USB 2.0 same as Lightning.— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) November 17, 2022
USB 3.2 supports speeds up to 20Gb/s and Thunderbolt 3 supports data transfer speeds up to 40Gb/s, suggesting the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max could see significant speed improvements over the USB 2.0 transfer speeds that are limited to 480Mb/s.
