iOS 16.1 to roll out on Monday – here’s what’s coming up
Apple has announced that iPadOS 16.1 will be released on Monday, and with the update, Apple is also expected to roll out iOS 16.1, which brings several new features to iPhone, including iCloud Shared Photo Library, Live Activities, standalone Fitness+, and more.
Beginning with iOS 16.1, Apple is releasing iCloud Shared Photo Library, which allows users to create a shared photo library with family, where photos are uploaded and shared automatically to the shared album as they are captured by the camera, or uploaded from a user’s existing camera roll.
With iCloud Shared Photo Library enabled, every user has access to add, delete, edit, or favourite the shared photos or videos, which will appear in each user’s Memories and Featured Photos, with a new toggle in the Camera app allowing group members to upload to the shared library instantly as the camera captures photos and videos.
With the update, Apple is bringing Live Activities to iPhone. Live Activities were announced with iOS 16 in June, bringing interactive notifications to the iPhone’s Lock Screen. For example, if you order an Uber, you can see the car approach through a new dynamic notification on the Lock Screen, which updates to show real-time information without having to open an app.
iOS 16.1 enables standalone Apple Fitness+, allowing subscribers to join the service without an Apple Watch for the first time.
New with iOS 16.1 for users in the United States is a Clean Energy Charging feature for iPhone, which will optimize charging times for when the grid is using cleaner energy sources, helping to decrease the carbon footprint of charging an iPhone overnight.
The Clean Energy Charging feature will try to reduce a user’s carbon footprint by selectively charging when lower carbon emission electricity is available. The device will learn from the user’s daily charging routine so it can reach full charge before they need to use it, similar to the existing Optimized Battery Charging feature, which also learns a user’s daily charging routine and stops recharging hitting 100% overnight.
Also coming with iOS 16.1 next week is Key sharing in the Wallet app, Savings accounts for Apple Card users, and more.
