Apple reportedly launching new second-generation AirPods Pro during second half of 2022
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported he expects Apple to release a new second-generation version of the AirPods Pro during the second half of 2022, saying the launch of the new earbuds will likely see the iPhone maker discontinue the original AirPods Pro after they were launched in October 2019.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Kuo says demand for Apple’s newest AirPods 3 is “significantly weaker” than the previous AirPods, claiming orders for the third-generation earbuds have been cut by over 30% in 2Q-Q3 2022 due to “the failed product segmentation strategy.”
Apple kept the second-generation AirPods available after the launch of the third-generation, and this is something Kuo says Apple won’t repeat when it releases a new version of the AirPods Pro later this year.
Kuo has previously reported that the new AirPods Pro will bring “innovative AirPods experience[s],” which could hint at earlier rumors of the earbuds introducing new health-monitoring features, such as a small accelerometer that could potentially determine body movement or something that could help a user monitor fitness while wearing their earbuds.
Reports suggest the earbuds will feature an all-new form factor that is expected to see Apple remove the short stem and give the earbuds a similar design to the Beats Fit Pro, support for Lossless Audio, a new sound-emitting charging case, and more.
