Apple starts new Apple Maps ground surveys across the UK
Apple has deployed a team wearing special backpacks to capture data on the streets of London, Birmingham and Manchester to improve Apple Maps, with on-foot ground surveys beginning today in the three cities until the end of May.
The ground surveys are being performed to collect data to improve Apple Maps and to support the Look Around feature. The on-foot team will be walking through areas inaccessible by car with a special backpack system containing technology to survey the area in order to create more accurate 2D maps.
As reported by Bloomberg on Monday, in Manchester, St Peter’s Square, Shambles Square and Albert Square will be among the areas mapped using the backpacks, and The Bullring, New Street and Edgbaston Street in Birmingham being part of the focus during the data collection period.
Apple will expand its UK Apple Maps surveys throughout spring, with the company sending vehicle to capture images in Berkshire, Bristol, Dorest, East Riding of Yorkshire, Greater London, Greater Manchester, Hampshire, Leicestershire, Merseyside, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, the West Midlands and West Yorkshire between April and June.
