Apple reportedly considered adding Face ID to 24-inch iMac
In an interesting tidbit included in this week’s “Power On” newsletter, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has suggested that Apple considered adding Face ID to the redesigned 24-inch iMac that launched last April, noting that Face ID for the MacBook will likely be years away.
After claiming that Apple is working on a new entry-level M2 MacBook Pro that is expected to arrive at some point this year, Gurman said Face ID was originally on the cards for the redesigned 24-inch iMac, though those plans ultimately fell through. The exact reasoning behind why Face ID wasn’t included in the production iMac is unknown, but it is said that when Face ID does eventually come to the Mac, it will likely be on the iMac first before any MacBook.
This is because Gurman notes how “At this point, the technology to embed Face ID into the thin MacBook displays doesn’t exist.”
Integrating Face ID components into an iMac display would be easier, Gurman suggests, because of the increased thickness, whereas for the MacBook, displays are extremely slim, meaning Apple would need to re-engineer the core technology to be able to house the Face ID scanner within such a tight housing.
Gurman says Apple “has definitely been working on this, but time will tell if they launch it.”
