Apple rumored to be working on new lower-priced external display
Apple is working on an external display described as being a lower-priced alternative to the high-end Pro Display XDR, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman who says he “strongly believes” a new “external monitor for [Apple’s] latest Macs” is on the way.
Apple’s only available external monitor, the 32-inch Retina 6K Pro Display XDR, retails at $4,999, making it a rather costly option for users who want to use an Apple-branded monitor in their setup.
In this week’s edition of Gurman’s “Power On” newsletter, the reporter says he imagines a lower-priced external display would be a hot seller should Apple release one, adding that by making some tweaks and reducing the size of the current Pro Display XDR, Apple may be able to create a similar quality monitor “at perhaps about half the price” because of the cost of building monitors likely dropping.
At this point, the cost of building that monitor has likely come down, and with a few tweaks and perhaps a slight drop in brightness, Apple might be able to get to a similar quality monitor (at a slightly smaller size) at perhaps about half the price.
Apple launched the Pro Display XDR in December 2019 alongside the all-new Mac Pro. The new 32-inch Retina display monitor is the largest Retina display ever made by Apple, with an anti-reflective coating, and matte option.
