AirTag Lost Mode messages can be read on any NFC smartphone, including Android
Apple has confirmed within a new AirTag support document that Lost Mode messages – the feature that allows users to leave a message for anyone who finds their items and lost AirTag – is compatible with any NFC smartphone, including Android devices.
Apple says, if a lost AirTag is found by someone, they can tap it using their iPhone or any NFC-capable device and be taken to a website that will display a contact phone number for the owner, if they have provided one, along with a personal message with information about how to contact the owner and what to do with the lost item.
Sold individually at $29 or in a pack of four for $99, AirTags will be available beginning Friday, April 30. Apple says, “AirTag is a super-easy way to keep track of your stuff. Attach one to your keys, slip another in your backpack. And just like that, they’re on your radar in the Find My app, where you can also track down your Apple devices and keep up with friends and family.”
Apple instructs anyone who finds a lost AirTag to hold the white side of the tag against their smartphone to begin the recovery process.
Tap and hold the top of your iPhone or NFC-capable smartphone to the white side of the AirTag. Tap the notification that appears. This opens a website that provides information about the AirTag, including its serial number. If the owner marked it as lost, you might see a message with information about how to contact the owner. You can contact the owner to let them know that you found their AirTag. You can view a Lost Mode message on any NFC-capable smartphone, such as an iPhone or Android phone.
