Apple adding option to download iOS updates over 5G
Apple has released a new support document this week, which shows that the iPhone 12 will be capable of downloading iOS updates over 5G.
Outlining the various data modes of the iPhone 12, Apple says new ‘Allow More Data on 5G’ option will enables higher data-usage features for apps and system tasks. These include higher-quality FaceTime, HD content on Apple TV, Apple Music songs and videos, and iOS updates over cellular.
This setting also allows third-party apps to use more cellular data for enhanced experiences. This is the default setting with some unlimited-data plans, depending on carrier.
iPhone 12 will offer two additional data modes: ‘Standard’ and ‘Low Data Mode.’ The first allows automatic updates and background tasks on cellular, and uses standard quality settings for video and FaceTime. The latter helps reduce Wi-Fi and cellular-data usage by pausing automatic updates and background tasks.
