“Hey Siri, happy birthday”: Siri turns 9
Apple introduced Siri, the voice-activated personal assistant that debuted with iOS 5 nine years ago today on October 4, 2011.
Siri was one of the main flagship features of the iPhone 4S, which like today, allowed users to ask their iPhone a question, such as “what’s the weather like today?” or “what time is it in London?” and receive a spoken response.
Siri’s abilities have grown over the years and have become available on the Mac and iPad, as well as becoming an integral part of the HomePod experience.
At the time, Siri’s main capabilities were fetching weather information, making calls, sending text messages or email, scheduling meetings and reminders, taking notes, searching the Internet, finding local businesses, offering directions and more.
Siri also offered various funny responses, such as jokes, stories and facts, which are still available if you shout “Hey Siri” today.
