Apple working on new low-cost Apple Watch, possibly with plastic casing
Apple is working on a new low-cost Apple Watch model, according to leaker Jon Prosser.
During a Q&A on Twitter earlier this week, Prosser confirmed a more affordable Apple Watch is on the way when asked if Apple would release an “Apple Watch SE” in the coming year. The leaker didn’t elaborate on what to expect from the new model however, previous rumors have pointed to Apple working on an Apple Watch with a plastic casing, with an official patent application showing a new wearable made in part from plastic and ceramic fibers.
The most affordable current-generation Apple Watch is the $399 40mm aluminum Apple Watch Series 5, although 2017’s 38mm Apple Watch Series 3 is still available from Apple starting at $199.
With rumors pointing to a new “Kids Mode” for the Apple Watch, it could be possible that the low-cost Apple Watch mentioned by Prosser could be aimed at the younger generation. Earlier this year, it was suggested that a “Schooltime” feature could allow parents to limit the usage of apps on their child’s Apple Watch during set hours, similar to Screen Time parental controls for iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Yep. More affordable Apple Watch on the way.

The use of plastic would make the rumored Apple Watch cheaper for Apple to produce, thus resulting in a more affordable price for customers. It’s yet to be seen if we may see smaller screen sizes for the new model given that it could be targeted towards a younger audience.
Apple is expected to unveil its next Apple Watch update next month – the Apple Watch Series 6. Reports suggest this year’s update will be minor, with the wearable gaining an improved battery for watchOS 7’s new sleep tracking features, improved ECG function, and an enabled blood-oxygen sensor.
