Apple reportedly interested in acquiring TikTok
TikTok is facing a pinball-style fight between President Trump, Microsoft, and now based on rumored reports, Apple too. Microsoft first made public interest in wanting to buy TikTok, with Trump stating that the platform is set to be banned in the US unless a US company buys it’s US operations.
Now, to add more fuel to the fight to buy TikTok, is the report of Apple wanting to buy it.
Multiple sources from Axios claim Apple “expressed interest” with buying TikTok from ByteDance. However, the report stresses that none of the sources are based within Apple, indicating the sources may be either connected more with TikTok’s US outfit or a middleman between the two companies if discussions were taking place.
It would be an unusual purchase, with TikTok being primarily a cross-platform app, so not only is it on iPhone, but also used a lot on the Android platform as well. With previous purchases such as the app DarkSky, Apple removed the Android variant, so if they were to buy the TikTok platform, would they do the same?
There is not much information available, with the rumors not coming from Apple directly, but it will be interesting to see what company could buy TikTok, which has blown up this year due to the lockdown and multiple viral challenges.
