Apple to announce ARM Mac chips at WWDC, claims report
Apple plans to announce the rumored transition from Intel to ARM chips for the Mac at WWDC in just under two weeks, according to Bloomberg, claiming new ARM Mac hardware isn’t expected to launch until 2021.
At the same event set to see Apple unveil iOS 14, macOS 10.16, watchOS 7 and more, Bloomberg suggests Apple will prepare developers to get their Mac apps ready for when the first Apple ARM machine is released, likely early the following year.
Detailing the rumored plans, Bloomberg claims Apple’s decision to switch to ARM-based processors was prompted by Intel’s slowing performance gains, with testing showing ARM offered big performance increases and boosted power efficiency.
It is believed the new ARM chips, expected to launch on three machines initially before eventually being used on the entire Mac lineup, are largely based on the technology arriving part of the next iPhone’s new A14 chip, with it previously being rumored the chip would run on a 5 nanometer fabrication process that would overtake the performance of current Intel chips.
