Carphone Warehouse to close all 531 stores in UK
Mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse has announced it will close all 531 of its standalone stores on April 3, resulting in around 60 percent of its workforce (2,900) loosing their jobs.
Alex Baldock, chief executive of Dixons Carphone said the company will now focus its attention on the running of Carphone Warehouse’s 305 in-store concessions at Currys PC World stores around the UK, owned by Dixons Carphone group.
Employees working at Carphone Warehouse concessions are not affected by the changes.
Speaking with BBC News, Baldock said today’s announcement is “an essential next step” in turning around its mobile business. A change is consumer shopping habits has meant customers look online to purchase new devices, he said, cutting the need for its stores which are losing more money as a result.
Carphone Warehouse sells iPhones, iPads, AirPods, Apple Watch and a range of Apple’s official accessories. Following today’s announcement, a “Mega Price Drop” sale has launched, including iPhone models.
