‘AirTags’ to use removable coin-shaped battery similar to Tile Pro, according to report
Apple’s rumored new Tile-like item tracking tags, “AirTags” are said to rely on a removable coin-shaped battery, according to prototype information obtained by MacRumors.
The small circular tracking device is expected to attach to valuables, such as wallets, backpacks, keys, and more, allowing users to track their belongings in the new Find My app on iOS, iPadOS and macOS.
Reports had previously claimed that Apple may allow for AirTags to be recharged wirelessly, using an inductive charger similar to the one used for the Apple Watch. It is unclear whether MacRumors has information relating to an old prototype, or if Apple has decided to use replaceable batteries instead.
According to the information, AirTags will use a CR2032 coin cell battery like the Tile Pro. Tile offers around one year of use with its battery before they need to be replaced. Presumably, Apple would want to match or beat this to remain competitive.
Users will be required the unscrew the back cover of the tracker to access the battery.
Based on a prototype of the tag, removing and replacing the battery will require unscrewing the back cover and performing a counter-clockwise twisting motion. The new battery must be inserted with the plus sign facing up.
