Apple to add new AR sensor in 2020 iPad models
A report from The Information which summarised the content of a secret internal meeting at Apple suggested a wide range of new information and insight into the roadmap of Apple AR and their view and plans for AR technology in their products.
Along with further rumours of Apple Glasses, the report also highlighted what Apple intends to do with the iPad to help gear it up for the release of the wider AR strategy in 2021/2022. They intend on releasing a new iPad Pro, slated for release in the time frame of the first half of 2020. These new iPads will be equipped with a new ‘AR Chip’, the report states the following;
“A new iPad Pro for release as early as the first half of 2020 will feature a new module with two camera sensors, up from one on the current model, and a small hole for the 3-D system, letting people create three-dimensional reconstructions of rooms, objects and people. The Cupertino, California-based technology giant also plans to add the sensor to new high-end iPhones later in 2020, along with 5G networking capabilities, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing unannounced products…”
So we will not need to wait very long to see the start of Apples wider AR plans, with AR boosts to the iPad and iPhone coming next year, and possibly the inclusion of AR equipped glasses the year after.
