Apple to switch from OLED to microLED on future Apple Watch models, starting 2020
Apple could make the switch from OLED to microLED displays on future Apple Watch models, according to a new report which claims Apple is in talks with Taiwanese display manufacturers ahead of 2020 when the company plans to roll out its microLED line.
Chinese site Economic Daily News claims sources with knowledge of Apple’s supply chain have said the company will ditch the LG-made OLED displays found on the current-generation Apple Watch in favor of more energy efficient microLED displays which can help Apple reduce the overall size of the wearable, in addition to making displays brighter.
Previously we’ve seen reports claim Apple will work in partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to develop MicroLED panels for Apple Watch, and that they could see production start as soon as this year.
Going agains the report published by the Economic Daily News, Bloomberg is out with a new story which predicts Apple’s shift away from OLED in favor of microLED may not be as quick as predicted, with the iPhone said to make the change within two-to-four years.
