Apple to pay licensing fee to winners of its ‘Shot on iPhone Challenge’
Apple has updated the terms of its “Shot on iPhone” competition, revealing the company will now pay winners a licensing fee for the use of their photographs.
The challenge sets out to find the “best photos shot on iPhone”, with a panel of eleven photography judges from around the world (including Phil Schiller) set to select ten winning photos that will be featured on billboards in select cities, and Apple retail locations.
As spotted by The Verge, Apple says it “believes strongly that artists should be compensated for their work” – a questionable comment because if true, surely the licensing fee agreement should have been part of the contest since day one.
Apple believes strongly that artists should be compensated for their work. Photographers who shoot the final 10 winning photos will receive a licensing fee for use of such photos on billboards and other Apple marketing channels.
Apple hasn’t specifically said what it will pay for each photograph, although photographers suggested earlier this week that the company should be paying $10,000 per photo to the winners.
Participants must be over 18, with Apple noting employees, including retail employees, along with their families, are not eligible to participate. Entries are being collected until February 7, with users able to submit a photo on Instagram or Twitter using the “#ShotOniPhone” hash tag or submitting a high-resolution photo to shotoniphone@apple.com with the file format “firstname_lastname_iphonemodel.”
