Small number of iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max units not charging while screen is turned off
A number of iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max users have taken to social media and the online Apple Support Communities to report that their devices are not charging automatically when the power cable is plugged in, and the screen of the device is turned off.
In what is likely an iOS 12 glitch rather than a full-blown hardware failure, the bug can cause some iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max units to stop responding entirely at some point after a Lightning cable is plugged in while the screen is turned off, and others simply not to charge all together while the display is off.
Effected users, who are beginning to refer to the issue as ‘ChargeGate’, speculate that the bug could be related to USB Restricted Mode, introduced in iOS 11.4.1, which prevents an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from communicating with USB accessories via the Lightning connector if one hour or longer has passed since the device was last unlocked.
Apple hasn’t acknowledged the issue as of yet; however, one would assume that a bug fixing iOS 12.0.1 update is being planned to correct the issue in the very near future. The Apple Post shared earlier in the week that iPhone X has outperformed the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max in battery life tests.
