Monzo adds long-awaited Apple Pay support
Mobile-only banking app Monzo has announced that Apple Pay support is now available for in store, in app and online purchases, reportedly ranking as the most requested feature by users over the last few months for the company.
London based Monzo, previously Mondo, set the record for “quickest crowd-funding campaign in history” when it raised £1m in 96 seconds, and has reportedly helped users save over £1,000,000 within 2 months of launching its in-app Coin Jar saving system.
Apple Pay expanded into the U.K. in 2015 and is now accepted by the majority of the countries major banking institutions, including HSBC, Barclays, Halifax, First Direct, Bank of Scotland, and more.
Apple Pay is an easier, safer way to pay in stores, in apps and online, with the Apple devices you use every day. We’d really love to have done this sooner and we’re sorry it’s taken so long. Apple Pay has been by far the most requested feature over the last few months, and we’re glad that it’s finally here! – Daniel Cannon, Lead Engineer at Monzo.
Monzo users can add Apple Pay through either the Wallet app of their iPhone, or via the Monzo banking app.

According to Jennifer Bailey, the head of Apple’s mobile payments business who spoke in 2017, half of the contactless payment terminals in the U.K. are now reportedly able to take Apple Pay transactions of any value, overcoming the £30.00 restriction which most contactless card readers were limited to accepting.
Apple reports that Apple Pay payments in the U.K. have risen 300% in the last year, with 23 banks now supporting the service. “Our momentum has been fantastic. We’re really excited about the progress,” Bailey told the Telegraph.
