All new apps required to support iPhone X display from April
Apple on Thursday notified developers via email that from April 2018 all new apps submitted to the App Store must be fully optimised to support the iPhone X’s Super Retina display, and that any builds submitted to the store will be required to be built against Apple’s iOS 11 SDK.
It has previously been noted that as of April 2018 Apple plans to stop accepting updates to watchOS 1 apps, requiring developers to submit their apps using the watchOS 2 SDK or later, and all newly submitted apps must be built with the watchOS 4 SDK or later.
The updated policy isn’t really that big of a deal as it only effects new apps coming to the App Store, and the vast majority of developers designing new applications will most likely of already taken the iPhone X into consideration and built their apps accordingly.
As of yet it’s unclear if Apple plans to expand the policy down the line and require all App Store submissions, including app updates to support the iPhone X’s Super Retina display and to be using Apple’s iOS 11 SDK.
Within the email, Apple said…
iOS 11 has brought innovative features and the redesigned App Store to hundreds of millions of customers around the world. Your apps can deliver more intelligent, unified, and immersive experiences with Core ML, ARKit, new camera APIs, new SiriKit domains, Apple Music integration, drag and drop for iPad, and more. – Starting April 2018, all new iOS apps submitted to the App Store must be built with the iOS 11 SDK, included in Xcode 9 or later. All new apps for iPhone, including universal apps, must support the Super Retina display of iPhone X.
