According to a new report published on Tuesday by Axios, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi has instructed engineers to halt work on Apple’s upcoming iOS 12 update, instructing teams to focus on refinements and fixes to iron out iOS performance and reliability issues.
The report claims Apple had been working on a refresh of the iOS Home screen, alongside improvements to CarPlay, updates to the Mail app, enhancements to photo editing and sharing as well as augmented reality improvements, health features and improved parental controls which have all now been postponed.
It’s believed iOS 12 will be a macOS High Sierra style of update, with Apple more interested in fine-tuning iOS rather than bringing new features to the operating system. – The decision was believed of been made in early January within a meeting with Apple executives and software engineers.
Apple most recently previewed iOS 11.3, a new software update for iPhone and iPad users launching this spring. The update will bring “major updates to ARKit, Messages and more”, including new Animoji on iPhone X, the ability to view health records in the Health app and updates to ARKit.
The update will bring new features to show a devices battery health, with the ability to make recommendations when a battery needs to be serviced, something Apple noted would launch within an iOS update last December follwoing a mass controversy over the announcement that Apple deliberately slows older iPhones with aging batteries to prevent performance issues.
