Apple is said to be expanding their battle against Qualcomm with a new lawsuit in the UK
A report from Bloomberg claims Apple is expanding their existing battle against Qualcomm with a new lawsuit in the UK, continuing their fight over the patent and royalty dispute that prompted lawsuits in other countries around the world.
In January we reported that Apple had sued iPhone modem supplier, Qualcomm, in a dispute over royalty payments, claiming the company has been “charging royalties for technologies they have nothing to do with.” shortly after the U.S. Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit against Qualcomm over unfair patent licensing practices.
In a formal statement by Apple, a company spokes person said that Qualcomm has taken “radical steps,” including “withholding nearly $1 billion in payments from Apple as retaliation for responding truthfully to law enforcement agencies investigating them.”
During Apple’s Q1 2017 earnings call, Tim Cook said he sees litigation as a last resort and is therefore open to settling the lawsuit:
I don’t like litigation, and so if there’s another way, then that would be great, but at this point I don’t see it. I fully expect at this point in time that it will take some time, but in the end, I think common sense will prevail, and the courts will see it for what it is. So that’s the way I see it.
